“Silenced by Academia”
Acrylic on Canvas
2015
Inspired by Adrian Piper’s ‘Catalysis series’ from the 1970s, this self-portrait transfers the notion of being silenced into the specific location of Academia, where still up to today the voices of women of colour are being constantly supressed.
The portrait depicts the struggles of women of colour within the institution, struggles of being confronted with processes of silencing through the depriving of ones experiences and knowledge, while at the same time questions how the appropriation of decolonial discourses finds its place into the center, stripped from all its original meaning and critique.
